Fake News, Fake Hate Crimes: Top 30 Hoaxes Since Election Day 2016

Over the last 20 years, I’ve seen big media attention given to terrible hate crimes, acts of racism and wrongful physical injury.

I was outraged. Disgusted. Sick.

Then I would see a small follow-up story that the person committed the crime to make a point or create publicity for a cause.

Now that’s really outrageous, disgusting, and sick!

  1. Social Media, in particular FaceBook, a.k.a FakeBook, is full of unprofessional commentary. Much of it is personal fabrication but a growing part is Fake News. In fairness FaceBook was never meant to be a news source. Anyone who reads FaceBook with the expectation of the truth has led a sheltered life.

Fake News from CNN has been an accepted norm for awhile, it is the worst offender of the “professional” reporting organizations. Many in the American audience have grown in sophistication. The lies become obvious after a decade or two of reading “news” reports. Now with the increasing effect of the Internet those previously pent-up factual suspicions from thoughtful non-professionals are being aired in public and receiving immediate widespread readership.

A measure of the effectiveness of citizen-reporters is reflected in new CNN personnel policies. Many if not all of the CNN commentators work for free. They trade their labor for free broadcast exposure. Add to that the overwhelming need by reporters to be the “first” to air a story and it is clear that they have little to lose by being inaccurate or completely wrong.

It was Thomas Jefferson who said of the newspapers of his day that anyone who read them was ill-informed. Anyone who didn’t was uninformed. He preferred the latter.

What Jefferson meant was for each citizen to use his own discernment in deciding the truth of the matter. Note he did not recommend closing the ill-informing newspapers. Likewise we shouldn’t close the Fake News sites, but we should clearly and repeatedly label them as such. Every now and then even a blind squirrel finds a nut.

Technology has given us the greatest tool for truth and fiction, it will give us the facts or the propaganda depending on where we look. It has reduced factual search time from days in Jefferson’s era to nanoseconds today. In a free society the truth depends on an educated and discerning electorate — and as we see today, with the Internet, a well connected electorate.

The only remaining requirement is to ask the “genie” the right question.
