This young lady, Kaylee Rodgers, is only 11 years old.

And she is autistic.

But that has not prevented her from singing in her school’s children’s choir.

She sings a new version of “Hallelujah”, first recorded by Leonard Cohen.

  1. Leonard Cohen, who just went home to his maker this past November, didn’t only “first record” “Hallelujah” — he composed it. Apparently he wrote several varying sets of lyrics to it, and various performers have made changes here and there as well, so there’s no single “correct” set of words.

Interestingly, the song as beautifully performed by Kaylee, contains lyrics that describe the birth of Jesus. Cohen was born into an orthodox Jewish family and remained a “Sabbath-observant Jew” all of his life despite forays into various other religions, including Zen Buddism. He even spoke prayers in Hebrew at some of his concerts.

While apparently never accepting Jesus as savior, he had a strong interest in the Person of Jesus and is quoted as saying, “I’m very fond of Jesus Christ. He may be the most beautiful guy who walked the face of this earth ….”

The wonderful performance by Kaylee, backed up by an excellent choir, is just one more proof that every human being born on the planet has value and worth, and in this case, great talent. It’s a reminder to us that we should always look for the best in people, especially when we encounter someone who is a little out of the ordinary.
