The 19th-century English historian and politician John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton – known as Lord Acton – said, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
We’ve seen corrupt abuse of power with the leaders of the federal intelligence-gathering agencies…
Former FBI Director James Comey, former CIA Director John Brennan, and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper politicized the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and lied to the FISA court to obtain illicit approval to spy on Americans.
We’ve written about the abuse of FISA and the FISA court in past Huey Report articles – most recently here.
The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 established procedures for the physical and electronic collection of “foreign intelligence information” between “foreign powers” and “agents of foreign powers” suspected of espionage against the United States … or of plotting terrorism against the U.S.
Some of the surveillance provisions in Section 702 of the law – which were added by the FISA Amendments Act of 2008 – were set to expire on March 15th of this year.
The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives renewed the Section 702 provisions … but the Senate – wanting to use the expiration as an opportunity to make sweeping revisions to the entire law – renewed Section 702 for only 75 days.
Further debate on FISA reform will take place before the end of May.
To get a sense of how important this debate and reform effort will be, watch this Fox News interview with John Malcolm, senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation (4 minutes).
