Privatizing the Post Office: Trump’s DOGE Team Ending Waste and Saving Taxpayers Billions

Huey ReportBureaucracy, Deep State, Taxation, USPS

The Post Office is bleeding taxpayer dollars year after year… $100 billion!

Since 2007, the Post Office has suffered losses exceeding $100 billion, with no end in sight.

For over 40 years I’ve been close to the post office. My ad agency has mailed over 800 million direct mail pieces, and we still mail millions a year.

And for 40 years I have been an advocate for ending the postal monopoly and privatizing the postal system. It’s been long overdue.

And President Trump has also had enough…

Despite Congress’ countless attempts at reform, the USPS remains inefficient, bureaucratic, and outdated.

Why?

Because there’s no competition, it’s a bureaucratic nightmare.

President Trump and the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), headed by Elon Musk, say it’s time for bold action—it’s time to privatize the Postal Service.

The current post office:

  • It’s socialism in action…
  • It’s dysfunctional…
  • It’s a tax drain…

And it’s bad for America – businesses, consumers and taxpayers.

Part of the problem is the Post Office is a government-protected monopoly that is wasteful and inefficient.

Part of the problem is Congress has tied the USPS’s hands, requiring expansive employee benefits, restricting pricing flexibility, and preventing cost-cutting measures such as reducing delivery frequency or closing low-volume post offices.

More than three-quarters of USPS costs go toward bloated employee compensation with the workforce’s average salary and benefits package far exceeding that of private competitors like UPS and FedEx.

The post office in fact is at the mercy of the most radical union in America supporting candidates like Bernie Sanders.

President Trump’s proposal to privatize the Postal Service would free the USPS from the stranglehold of government bureaucracy and allow it to operate like a private business—efficiently, competitively, and profitably.

Privatization has succeeded in other countries.

Here are some examples:

  • Germany: Deutsche Post transitioned from a government-run service to a private corporation in 2000. Today, it’s a global leader in logistics and delivery, operating profitably without government subsidies.
  • Japan: Privatized in 2007, Japan Post Holdings has diversified its operations, offering competitive services while maintaining financial stability.
  • United Kingdom: Royal Mail underwent privatization in 2013, significantly improving efficiency and service quality while cutting costs.

These examples demonstrate how privatization fosters competition, spurs innovation, and delivers better service to customers.

There is a huge unionized bureaucracy within the USPS that will fight Trump and DOGE to stop any changes or any action to privatize… but it can be done…

Privatizing the USPS would involve several key steps:

  1. Legislative Action: Congress must pass legislation to transition the USPS into private ownership. This would remove the government’s monopoly over mail delivery and open the market to competition.
  2. Streamlining Operations: Under private ownership, the USPS could adopt market-driven practices, such as closing unprofitable post office locations, optimizing delivery schedules, and implementing modern technology for greater efficiency.
  3. Addressing Labor Costs: Labor reform is critical. Current USPS salaries and benefits far exceed industry norms. A private entity would renegotiate contracts to align with market standards.
  4. Diversification and Competition: Like its international counterparts, a privatized USPS could diversify its offerings, expanding into logistics and digital services. Competition from private players like FedEx and UPS would ensure better consumer pricing and service.
  5. Maintaining Universal Service: Privatization can still ensure service to rural and remote areas through targeted subsidies or contractual obligations, similar to how utilities operate.

Why Taxpayers Can’t Afford to Wait…

Currently, the postal deficit is $1.8 trillion and growing billions of loses with no hope of stopping the insanity.

The USPS’s unfunded liabilities alone, including pensions and retiree health benefits, exceed $110 billion.

These liabilities grow every year, adding to the financial burden on American taxpayers.

Attempts to modernize within the current framework have failed, with cost-cutting measures insufficient to stem the tide of red ink.

Meanwhile, private-sector innovators like FedEx and UPS have proven they can deliver superior service without a government safety net.

So why should taxpayers continue to foot the bill for an outdated, inefficient monopoly when the private sector could run the USPS better—and at no cost to the public? It doesn’t make sense not to privatize it.

Privatization would reduce government waste, cut taxpayer burdens, and foster private-sector growth. Trump’s administration has already floated ideas for overhauling inefficient government agencies, and the USPS is the perfect start to downsizing waste in the government.

The American people deserve better than a government-run postal system hemorrhaging billions each year.

Privatization isn’t just a financial necessity; it’s a step toward innovation, competition, and efficiency.

With Trump’s leadership, we can deliver real reform and end the USPS’s decades-long legacy of failure and waste.

It’s time to turn this money pit into a modern, profitable enterprise.
