Overcomer: A Must-See Movie – Now on Netflix

Huey ReportFamily, Media, Movies

Shelly and I just finished an incredible drama on Netflix called Overcomer. It surprised us in the best possible way.

It’s one of the very few films you’ll find on streaming today that is absolutely worth your time… and worth recommending to others.

Yes, kids will like it also.

From about 8 years old and up, Overcomer is completely appropriate.

No garbage.

No hidden agendas.

Just a powerful, uplifting story.

That matters.

In more than 25 years of writing my newsletter, I’ve probably talked about only 10 or 12 movies in total.

That’s it.

So, when I recommend one, it’s not casual.

This one is important enough that Shelly and I plan to watch it again.

That’s how good it is.

What’s it about?

At the surface level, Overcomer follows a reluctant high-school basketball coach who is forced to take over a struggling cross-county team.

But that’s not the real story.

The heart of the movie centers on a 15-year-old student wrestling with identity, loss, and purpose – and a coach who is forced to confront the same questions.

Why it matters to you

Here’s what makes Overcomer different:

  • It does not water down Christian truth.
  • It clearly presents the Gospel.
  • It boldly asks the question most people avoid: “Who are you… really?”

The film draws heavily from biblical identity in Christ – especially the truth that who you are is not defined by:

  • Your past
  • Your pain
  • Your performance

Whether you are:

  • A committed believer
  • A new Christian
  • Or someone still searching

You will be challenged.

You will be encouraged.

You will walk away thinking.

A few facts worth knowing

  • Released in 2019 by the Kendrick Brothers (War Room, Facing the Giants, Fireproof)
  • Made on a modest budget – and went on to gross nearly $40 million
  • Praised for strong storytelling, clean content, and spiritual depth
  • Frequently cited by viewers as one of the Kendrick Brothers’ most emotionally powerful films

That doesn’t happen by accident.

Final word:

It’s rare – even among Christian films – to find one with this level of substance, clarity, and heart.

Watch it.

Share it.

And when the screen asks you for a rating…

Give it two thumbs up.

Honestly – it deserves more than that.
