Setting the Record Straight: Jesus was Jewish
Historical and biblical scholars and experts have well-documented the origins of the Jewish people, their connection to the land of Israel, and Jesus’ lineage.
There is no doubt that Jesus was a Jew. The Bible and historical evidence affirm his Jewish identity.
Claims that Jesus was a “Palestinian” are blatant attempts to rewrite history. Jesus was born in Judea, a Roman province with a predominantly Jewish population, and he identified fully as a Jew, descending from King David.
Efforts to rewrite this history distort both biblical and historical truths.
Here are some key points that confirm that Jesus was Jewish:
- Lineage: Jesus’ genealogy, as detailed in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, traces his ancestry back to King David and Abraham, central figures in Jewish history and faith.
- Cultural Practices: Jesus was circumcised on the eighth day, as prescribed by Jewish law (Luke 2:21). He participated in Jewish festivals such as Passover (Luke 22:7-20) and observed the Sabbath (Luke 4:16).
- Teachings and Ministry: Jesus’ teachings were deeply rooted in Jewish scripture. He quoted extensively from the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible (the 5 books of the Old Testament are called the Torah) and taught in synagogues (Mark 1:21, Luke 4:16-21).
- Title and Recognition: Jesus was frequently referred to as “Rabbi” (John 1:38, John 3:2), a term of respect for Jewish teachers, and he openly identified with Jewish beliefs and traditions.
- Crucifixion Inscription: The sign placed above Jesus during his crucifixion read “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews” (John 19:19-22), affirming how both his followers and detractors identified him.
The historical and Biblical evidence is clear.
As for the claims about Israel being home to the “Palestinians,” that is another misnomer propagated by the radical secular socialists.
The historical connection between the Jewish people and the land of Israel is well-documented. The Bible and archaeological evidence affirm that the Israelites settled in Canaan (later Israel) around the 17th century B.C. and established Jewish rule under leaders like King David.
Even after conquests by Assyria, Babylon, and Rome, the Jewish presence in the land endured.
The term “Palestine” originated with the Romans in 70 A.D. as a reference to the ancient Philistines following their suppression of Jewish revolts.
However, this renaming did not erase Jewish ties to the land, which persisted for centuries.

Even under Roman control, the region’s identity as Jewish was clear. In 6 A.D., Rome formally named the land Judea, recognizing its Jewish roots.
The modern concept of “Palestinians” as a distinct national group emerged much later, primarily in the 20th century, and does not reflect the region’s ancient history.
Islam’s false claim to Jerusalem
The Islamic claim to Jerusalem and the surrounding land stems from a much later period. Mohammed, born in the 6th century A.D., never visited Jerusalem but claimed it as part of his religious vision.
A few decades after his death, Islamic armies seized Jerusalem and other parts of the Middle East through conquest. These conquests were marked by violence, including forced conversions and subjugation of non-Muslims, reshaping the region’s demographics.
Reclaiming the Truth
The Vatican’s Christmas display dangerously perpetuated a falsehood that distorts the life of Jesus Christ and his identity as a Jew.
As Christians, we are called to stand firm in the truth of Scripture.
The story of Jesus is inseparable from the story of Israel—a connection rooted in God’s divine plan and affirmed by historical evidence.
The truth is not just a matter of history but a cornerstone of Christian belief and identity.
Thankfully, due to the overwhelming outrage from Christians around the world, the Vatican appears to have removed a Nativity scene that showed baby Jesus lying on a keffiyeh, the traditional scarf used as a national symbol by Palestinians and often worn at anti-Israel protests.
The “Nativity of Bethlehem 2024,” created by Palestinian artists Johny Andonia and Faten Nastas Mitwasi, was part of a display supported by entities such as the Palestinian Embassy to the Vatican and the Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs in Palestine—both linked to the Palestine Liberation Organization.
The Vatican’s concession marks an important responsibility for Christians to defend Biblical truth and history.
