Although her endorsement sparked a media frenzy and mobilized her fanbase to register to vote, the ultimate impact of her political involvement remains questionable…
It all started when Swift announced her support for Harris in an Instagram post to her 280 million followers. She praised the vice president as a “steady-handed, gifted leader.” Her post also tried to clear up misinformation after AI-generated images falsely depicted her endorsing Trump.
Swift’s endorsement included a direct call to action, encouraging her followers to visit Vote.gov to register to vote.
The result? A flood of internet traffic and voter registration:
- 405,999 visitors were directed to Vote.gov via Swift’s custom link within 24 hours of her Instagram story, according to the U.S. General Services Administration.
- This represented 13 times the typical daily traffic to the site compared to the previous week.
- Voter registration efforts also surged on radical socialist site Vote.org:
- Over 52,000 new voter registrations in the hours following Swift’s endorsement.
- 144,000 individuals checked their registration status during the same period.
These numbers suggest Swift’s influence on voter engagement is significant, but there were some unintended consequences… Swifties for Trump.
One Swiftie for Trump, Jenna Piwowarczyk, whose TikTok post got 216,000 views, said the Swifties for Trump movement gained momentum after Trump’s post on TikTok.
In September 2024, a New York Times and Siena College poll showed that Donald Trump had a favorability score of 47%, compared to Taylor Swift’s 42%.
It also showed:
- 66% of respondents said Swift’s endorsement made no difference in how they would vote in November.
- 20% said they are “somewhat” or “much less likely” to vote for Harris now that Swift has endorsed her.
- 41% said Swift shouldn’t speak publicly about politics.
Swift also had a 2023 voter registration effort that caused a 1,226% traffic boost to Vote.gov within an hour, how much of that activity translated into actual votes?
Young voters, especially those under 30, who were critical to President Biden’s 2020 victory, favored him by a 24-point margin. But when Harris replaced him, those poll numbers showed that under 30 voters grew disillusioned with Democratic leadership and their failed policies.
Swift’s endorsement may have temporarily boosted enthusiasm for Harris, but it quickly petered out when November rolled around.
Despite Swift’s efforts, voters voted for Trump, including a large number of Gen Zers.
Donald Trump significantly increased his support among Generation Z voters (ages 18-29) compared to 2020. Approximately 42% of Gen Z voters supported Trump, a 6-point increase from the 36% he garnered in 2020.
Swift’s endorsement highlights the fact that celebrity activism may energize existing supporters, but it doesn’t persuade undecided voters.
Taylor Swift’s star power may light up stadiums, but policies, not playlists, win elections.
While her endorsement energized voter registration, it’s clear that Instagram posts and celebrity fandom can’t overcome the real-world concerns that drove Americans to the polls.
