Across America, Israel is on the ballot in the midterm elections…

Zohran Mamdani and other politicians are campaigning on denouncing Israel for committing genocide in Gaza.

It’s the narrative about Israel that’s being spread on social media and traditional news media outlets…

And many are shifting their views and agreeing with the genocide narrative.

But is this narrative true?

Is this narrative supported by hard evidence?

Last week was the third anniversary of the October 7th attack in southern Israel by Hamas terrorists from Gaza.

To commemorate the slaughter, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani decided to verbally attack Israel.

In a post on X, he devoted a short paragraph to the massacre before using almost three times as many words to criticize the Israeli response.

It was pure propaganda that might as well have come from Hamas itself.
Mamdani wrote about the “ongoing genocide” in Gaza — a lie not even the Hamas “health ministry” supports.

So what is the real narrative?

What actually happened on October 7th… and what has actually happened in Gaza since then?

Here are 5 facts about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza you probably aren’t aware of:

1. Hamas terrorists launched 5,000 rockets into Israel on a Jewish holiday.

October 7th, 2023 was a Sabbath day – Shabbat – the last day of the 7-day Feast of Tabernacles – called Sukkot by the Jews.

One minute before sunrise, a thousand Gaza militants began firing a total of 5,000 rockets into southern Israel.

Most of the rockets were launched during the first 3 hours of the attack.

Simultaneously, about 3,800 members of the elite Hamas Nukhba force, plus around 2,200 other terrorists and looters, crossed the border into Israel.

They breached the border at 119 different entry points.

2. Among those who were murdered on October 7th, some were Palestinian Arabs living in southern Israel.

Many people in Western societies do not realize that 21% of the population of Israel consists of Palestinian Arabs.

They have full citizenship rights – the same rights enjoyed by Jewish Israelis.

They serve in the Israeli Knesset and in local government positions.

They serve in the IDF – the Israeli Defense Forces.

The Hamas terrorists murdered civilians indiscriminately in streets, in homes, in kibbutz communities, and at a rave music festival.

Many bodies were so mutilated and burned that it was difficult to determine the actual death toll.

The breakdown of the number of people slaughtered was approximately:
• 695 mostly Israeli civilians, including 36 children – 49 of which were U.S. citizens
• 373 security and IDF forces – most of whom were unarmed border guards
• 71 foreign nationals – most of whom were from Thailand

The final confirmed body count was 1,139. A few Israeli citizens are still missing.

In addition, 251 Israelis were taken hostage – 12 of which were U.S. citizens.

3. The Palestinian propaganda machine has convinced the West that Israel is the aggressor and the Palestinians are the victims.

Even while the October 7th attacks were in progress, the Harvard University Undergraduate Palestine Solidarity Committee – and other student coalitions – released joint statements holding Israel “entirely responsible for all unfolding violence.”

On October 8, Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and other national organizations issued toolkits and called for action on U.S. and international campuses.

Pro-Palestinian organizations characterized the attack as a justified response to decades of Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory.

For three years now they have been calling Israel the aggressor in the war with Hamas, and the Palestinians the victims… as though Israel has no right to defend itself against an enemy that wants to destroy it.

This perspective on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been constantly broadcast on social media platforms throughout Western societies.

Younger generations have been bombarded with continuous videos of civilian casualties, destroyed infrastructure and displaced families on TikTok, Instagram and X.

Two messages are explicitly portrayed by these videos:
1. Israel is responsible for all of the destruction and loss of life in Gaza.
2. Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people.

Through video deception, pro-Palestinian influencers are winning a propaganda war.

Meanwhile, the news coming out of Gaza on which the video messages are based is heavily controlled by Hamas.

No unbiased news organizations are allowed to report freely and independently from inside Gaza.

Al Jazeera, funded by Qatar, is the only news organization that maintains a continuous live broadcast presence inside Gaza.

Their local Palestinian correspondents produce a steady stream of biased news coverage favoring Hamas and portraying Israel and the IDF as evil aggressors determined to kill as many civilians – women and children – as possible.

Global media networks are totally dependent on Al Jazeera, local Palestinian journalists, “stringers” and freelancers living in Gaza to gather visual evidence, conduct interviews and track
casualties on the ground.

4. Israel has no desire or intention to commit genocide against Palestinians.

Hamas wants to destroy the nation of Israel and annihilate all Jews.

Their original 1988 organizational charter says so.

Israel wants only to decimate Hamas’ ability to wage war against her… and to eliminate Hamas’ ability to fire rockets into Israeli cities and kibbutzes.

Israel has no desire to kill Palestinian women and children – contrary to pro-Palestinian charges that they do.

Al Jazeera reports that the Israeli genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023 has killed 74,000 Palestinians – including 26,000 children.

The population – 50% or more being children under the age of 18 – has decreased from approximately 2.23 million before the war to approximately 2.13 million today.

Part of the population decline is because about 100,000 Palestinians have fled Gaza since the war began.

Even if the Al Jazeera numbers are correct – which is highly doubtful – this number of deaths is hardly genocide.

Why are the reported Palestinian war deaths suspect?

Because they come from the Gaza Health Ministry, which doesn’t distinguish between war deaths and natural deaths – nor between war deaths caused by Israeli soldiers versus war deaths caused by Hamas terrorists.

Here’s just one example of deceptive reporting:

On June 1, 2025, the Washington Post reported that Israeli soldiers had opened fire on a crowd of Palestinians at an aid distribution center and had killed at least 31 innocent people waiting to receive help.

The incident had been reported by “health officials.”

The Post later deleted the story when it was determined that the Israelis probably weren’t responsible for the shootings.

But the damage to the reputation of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) had already been done.

5. Israel is doing the opposite of what she would be doing if she wanted to commit genocide.

If Israel wanted to commit genocide in Gaza, they could have easily done so by now.

Nothing in Gaza could have stopped them.

Instead of intentional genocide, Israel has done everything possible to avoid civilian casualties while strategically attempting to destroy Hamas.

Because news reports of Israeli strikes against Hamas targets are overwhelmingly pro-Hamas and anti-Israel, it is not widely known that:
• Hamas has built weapons storage tunnels under hospitals, schools, mosques, and other places heavily populated by women and children.
• Hamas terrorists hide in these tunnels – in effect using civilians as human shields.
• Hamas wants maximum civilian casualties in order to turn public opinion against Israel.
• Hamas threatens to execute civilians if they attempt to escape from a location that Israel has announced they are going to bomb.

Yes, Israel drops leaflets, sends text messages, posts on social media and makes phone calls announcing where they will be bombing to eradicate Hamas.

They even give escape routes for civilians to reach safe havens before bombing occurs.

No government or military intending to commit genocide would do such a thing.

Israel has also facilitated over 2 million tons of humanitarian aid into Gaza since the October 7th Hamas attacks.

However, not all of the food and other aid has reached those who need it…

Some aid is confiscated by Hamas and deliberately destroyed to make Israel appear to be uncaring.

Israel has also:
• Actively facilitated the vaccination of thousands of Gazan children
• Evacuated Gazans who needed specialized medical treatment

If Israel wanted to commit genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza, she would not act to preserve the lives of children, nor help Gazans who need medical treatment.

FAQs:

Q: What is the main claim some politicians and media are making about Israel in Gaza, and is it
accurate?
A: Several politicians campaigning for the 2026 midterms (including Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan and James Talarico in Texas), along with figures like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, denounce Israel for committing “genocide” in Gaza. Even Hamas’s own health ministry data does not support a genocide claim.

Q: What actually happened on October 7, 2023?
A: On the Jewish Sabbath and the final day of Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles), Hamas launched approximately 5,000 rockets into southern Israel, mostly in the first three hours. Simultaneously, about 3,800 elite Hamas Nukhba force members plus around 2,200 other terrorists and looters breached the border at 119 entry points. They indiscriminately murdered 1,139 civilians (Israeli and foreign, including U.S. citizens) in streets, homes, kibbutzim, and at a music festival.

Q: Do Palestinian Arabs have rights inside Israel?
A: Yes. About 21% of Israel’s population consists of Palestinian Arabs who hold full citizenship rights equal to those of Jewish Israelis. They serve in the Knesset, local government, and the IDF.

Q: How has the “Israel is the aggressor / Palestinians are the victims” narrative spread?
A: Even while the October 7 attacks were underway, groups such as the Harvard Undergraduate Palestine Solidarity Committee issued statements blaming Israel entirely. Students for Justice in Palestine and similar organizations quickly framed the attack as a legitimate response to “occupation.”

Q: Why do so many believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza?
A: Social media (TikTok, Instagram, X) has been flooded with videos of civilian casualties and destruction that portray Israel as solely responsible and as committing genocide. News from inside Gaza is heavily controlled by Hamas; Al Jazeera (Qatar-funded) provides continuous coverage that the article describes as biased toward Hamas.

Q: Does Hamas’s own charter support claims that it only seeks “freedom” or territory?
A: No. Hamas’s original 1988 charter explicitly calls for the destruction of Israel and the annihilation of Jews. Israel’s objective is only to eliminate Hamas’s ability to attack Israeli cities and communities, not to destroy the Palestinian people.

Q: Are the high Palestinian death figures evidence of Israeli genocide?
A: No. Al Jazeera reports roughly 74,000 Palestinian deaths (including 26,000 children) since October 7, 2023. Gaza’s population has declined from about 2.23 million to about 2.13 million – partly because ~100,000 people have left. Even taking those numbers at face value, this does not constitute genocide.

Q: If Israel wanted to commit genocide, could it have done so?
A: Yes. Israel could have easily destroyed Gaza’s population if that were the intent. Instead, Israel has taken extensive measures to reduce civilian harm: dropping leaflets, sending text messages and phone calls, posting on social media, and providing escape routes before strikes. Hamas stores weapons and hides fighters under hospitals, schools, mosques, and other civilian sites, using the population as human shields and seeking maximum civilian casualties for propaganda purposes.

Q: What other positive actions has Israel taken regarding Gaza’s civilian population?
A: Israel has facilitated more than 2 million tons of humanitarian aid into Gaza (though some is seized or destroyed by Hamas). It has actively supported mass vaccination campaigns for Gazan children and has evacuated Gazans needing specialized medical care unavailable inside Gaza. These actions are the opposite of what a government intending genocide would do.
