$24 billion… has vanished.
It was spent to stop the massive homeless problem under Gavin Newsom’s leadership… but no one can explain where the money went.
As Margaret Thatcher once said, “The problem with spending other people’s money is that you eventually run out of it… And California has run out of money with a budget deficit of over $70 billion.
Unless you are a radical socialist and can print money, as is the case with the federal government, or increase taxes as the states do.
Newsom, California politicians, and the biased media said that they were finally going to do something about the homeless problem plaguing California.
Unfortunately, the nine state agencies that ran the 30+ programs to solve the homeless problem seemed to have lost $24 billion of taxpayer money. They couldn’t explain what they spent the money on and could not show any tangible results.
That’s right, California can’t figure out how the $24 billion was spent.
A recent state auditor’s report by the Legislative Analyst’s Office found that nothing changed with the homeless despite spending $24 billion on homeless and housing programs.
The audit also found that the California Interagency Council on Homelessness (Cal ICH), which is responsible for coordinating agencies and allocating resources for homelessness programs, stopped tracking whether the programs were working in 2021. It also “failed to collect and evaluate outcome data for these programs due to the lack of a consistent method,” the audit report said.
Newsom’s Homeless program was supposed to help cities and counties turn hotels and other buildings into housing for the homeless. Each unit costs an average of $144,000, much cheaper than the $300,000 to $500,000 needed to build new homes.
CaliWORKS, one of the 30 programs involved, spent an average of $12,000 to $22,000 per unit—one homeless person costs taxpayers roughly $50,000 per year just for housing.
However, few units were created, and many are vacant.
Homelessness in California has reached over 181,000 people, with most living on the street (about two-thirds).
“This is standard Gavin Newsom – make a splashy announcement, waste a bunch of taxpayer money, and completely fail to deliver,” said California Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher. “Californians are tired of the homeless crisis, and they’re even more tired of Gavin’s excuses.”
Todd Langton, founder of the Coalition for the Unhoused of Silicon Valley, said, ” He’s not surprised at all by the audit’s results. Small nonprofits like my own are more successful at housing people than larger ones… They just eat up state and city funding.”
Indeed, the only success is with nonprofit faith-based programs, such as the Dream Center and Fred Jordon Mission, both in Los Angeles.
So, what’s Gov Newsom’s solution?
More “government oversight” …
More “transparency” …
And, of course, “more tax dollars.”
Remember, Newsom was the mayor of San Francisco, promising no more homeless.
Really?
Nothing happened then, and nothing is happening now.
