The progressive Democrats and the media are outraged that the Trump administration has withdrawn the U.S. from the UN Human Rights Council.

Rep. Nita M. Lowey (D-NY) called the withdrawal “another isolationist maneuver in its foreign policy strategy that is weakening U.S. global leadership.”

Senate Foreign Relations Committee member Christopher A. Coons (D-DE) said the withdrawal sends a clear message that the Trump administration “does not intend to lead the world when it comes to human rights.”

And Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, said “The Trump administration’s withdrawal is a sad reflection of its one-dimensional human rights policy.”

So why did the U.S. withdraw from the Human Rights Council?

Let me explain…

The Human Rights Council was formed in 2006 to replace the U.N. Human Rights Commission … which had been widely discredited for electing member countries having poor track records on human rights.

Things have not improved…

The Council consists of 47 member countries, each of which serves a staggered term of 3 years.

Some of the worst human rights abusers – such as Cuba, Saudia Arabia and Venezuela – currently sit on the Council.

In 2006, the George W. Bush administration declined to seek membership.

The U.S. joined in 2009 under the Obama administration.

The Council is heavily biased against Israel … accusing them of human rights abuses against Palestinians in every session…

In fact, Israel is the only country in the world whose human rights record is discussed in every session as “Item 7” on the agenda.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has repeatedly called for reform of the Human Rights Council … but her pleas have been ignored.

In announcing the withdrawal, Haley said of the Council, “For too long, it has been a protector of human rights abusers and a cesspool of political bias. Regrettably, it is now clear that our call for reform was not heeded.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also remarked in a joint statement, “The Human Rights Council is a poor defender of human rights. Worse than that, the Human Rights Council has become an exercise in shameless hypocrisy, with many of the world’s worst human rights abuses going ignored and some of the world’s most serious offenders sitting on the council itself.”
