The atmosphere was extraordinary.

On May 17, 1776, the Continental Congress called for:

And speakers repeatedly focused on spiritual renewal — not political conquest.

No one was demanding a theocracy.

No one was calling for hatred.

Instead, the dominant message was this:

America desperately needs repentance, humility, prayer, and moral renewal.

He referenced the famous painting.

Critics immediately attacked the story and the famous painting depicting Washington kneeling in prayer.

It is true that historians debate whether the exact dramatic scene happened precisely as later artwork portrayed it.

The story primarily comes from longstanding accounts connected to a Quaker named Isaac Potts.

Some historians question aspects of the account.

Others believe it is entirely plausible.

But even many skeptics acknowledge the broader truth:
George Washington frequently referenced God’s providence, humility, prayer, and dependence upon God throughout the Revolutionary War.

And throughout Rededicate 250, that larger message echoed repeatedly:
Liberty requires virtue.

Freedom requires moral responsibility.

It was about recognizing that liberty without virtue eventually collapses.

And that repentance, humility, gratitude, and dependence upon God remain essential for any nation hoping to survive and flourish.
