1) What Sparked the anti-Christian bigotry?
Hegseth has a tattoo on his arm of the “Jerusalem Cross,” a Christian symbol that represents the Christian faith’s connection to Israel and the suffering of Christ.
2) The Cross tattoo
The Jerusalem Cross has been a symbol of Christian faith for centuries and is one of the most recognizable emblems in the world. It’s also known as the Crusader’s Cross or the Jerusalem Crusaders Cross.
The cross first appeared in the years before Pope Blessed Urban II called for the First Crusade (1096-1099) to recapture Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim control.
The symbol is comprised of five crosses, which represent Christ’s five wounds: the four smaller crosses represent the wounds on his hands and feet, and the large cross represents the piercing of his side.
The four smaller crosses represent the Four Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
The symbol represents Christ’s command to spread the Gospel to the four corners of the Earth.
3) The accuser
An Army National Guard service member who served with Hegseth, flagged Hegseth as a “possible insider threat,” claiming that the tattoo represented Hegseth’s “white supremacy.”
According to the AP report:
“A fellow Guard member who was the unit’s security manager and on an anti-terrorism team at the time, shared an email he sent to the unit’s leadership flagging a different tattoo reading “Deus Vult” that’s been used by white supremacists, concerned it was an indication of an “Insider Threat.
Retired Master Sgt. DeRicko Gaither, who was serving as the D.C. Army National Guard’s physical security manager and on its anti-terrorism force protection team in January 2021, told the AP that he received an email from a former D.C. Guard member that included a screenshot of a social media post that included two photos showing several of Hegseth’s tattoos.
Gaither told AP he researched the tattoos — including one of a Jerusalem Cross and the context of the words “Deus Vult,” Latin for “God wills it,” on his bicep — and determined they had sufficient connection to extremist groups to elevate the email to his commanding officers.”
According to Hegseth “he was ordered to stand down as one of several National Guard members assigned to President Biden’s inauguration due to the Jerusalem Cross tattoo.”
“I was deemed an extremist because of a tattoo by my National Guard unit in Washington D.C. and my orders were revoked to guard the Biden inauguration,” Hegseth said. “I joined the Army in 2001 because I wanted to serve my country. Extremists attacked us on 9/11, and we went to war, twenty years later, I was deemed an ‘extremist’ by that very same Army … the military I loved, I fought for, I revered … spit me out.”
4) To Pete’s defense
JD Vance was quick to come to Hegseth’s defense posting the following on X:
“They’re attacking Pete Hegseth for having a Christian motto tattooed on his arm. This is disgusting anti-Christian bigotry from the AP, and the entire organization should be ashamed of itself.”
“Anti-Christian bigotry in the media on full display. They can target me — I don’t give a damn — but this type of targeting of Christians, conservatives, patriots and everyday Americans will stop on DAY ONE at DJT’s DoD,” said Hegseth.
Hegseth served tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and holds degrees from both Princeton and Harvard.
