Today our nation is more divided than at any time since the Civil War.
In the 1860s, the division was between states that permitted slavery and states that didn’t.
Today, our division isn’t between states – it’s much more national and much more homogeneous.
We are divided politically.
We are divided ideologically.
We are divided morally and spiritually.
These types of divisions in America are not unusual.
They have always existed.
But what’s unusual is the degree of division today.
It’s greater than ever before.
And we’ve lost the ability to talk about our divisions rationally and civilly.
We used to be able to debate about our differences and give rational reasons for our opinions.
Not anymore.
Now people are radically offended by anyone who disagrees with them.
Their emotions get in the way of respectful discourse.
And emotions – when there is no moral compass to control them – can lead to irrational and violent behavior.
How did we get here as a nation?
Why did we depart so far from the Christian principles on which the United States of America was founded?
Here are 6 reasons that may surprise and alarm you:
1. Moral relativism.
Moral relativism in some areas of behavior – such as sexual behavior – has been largely accepted for a long time.
But hatred for other human beings – and especially murder – has been consistently viewed in America as morally wrong.
Not anymore.
Hatred for those with whom we disagree is now being justified on “moral” grounds.
And it’s gotten even worse…
There’s an increasing disregard for human life among Americans when political disagreement is involved.
In a survey of 1,264 American adults conducted last year by the Network Contagion Research Institute and the Rutgers University Social Perception Lab, the results were stunning.
Respondents were asked how justified they thought it would be to murder President Trump or Elon Musk.
The scale ranged from “completely unjustified” to “completely justified.”
The results for “at least somewhat justified” were alarming:
- Murdering President Trump – 38%
- Murdering Elon Musk – 31%
- Destroying a Tesla dealership – 39%
Also consider how many people celebrated the assassination of Charlie Kirk last September.
Like his assassin, they believed he was hateful because he advocated for Biblical morality.
And look at the online reaction to the latest assassination attempt against President Trump:
“Deranged, deluded leftist women are in full meltdown mode, raging that the assassination attempt on President Trump failed. These are the same women who claim to be the ‘tolerant’ ones.”[1]
This same post on X stated that the “They missed AGAIN” trend was “exploding on the left.”
From the survey results above and the social media reaction to the Charlie Kirk assassination and the latest Trump assassination attempt, it appears that a dangerous percentage of Americans no longer view political opponents merely as people who are mistaken.
They increasingly see them as evil people who should be silenced, punished – and in some cases, physically attacked or murdered.
2. The influences of the biased legacy media and social media.
Donald Trump – as POTUS – has always been hated by the political Left in America.
He’s also been hated by the Left-wing news and social media commentators – the self-appointed cheerleaders for the political Left.
There’s nothing new about political operatives and commentators criticizing their opponents.
What’s new is the level of acceptance by the general public of “the persona assigned by media or political messengers.”[2]
They accuse him of being a morally bankrupt narcissist.
They accuse him of being a rapist…
A pedophile…
A racist…
A fascist…
An authoritarian dictator…
The greatest threat to democracy since the Civil War…
A Nazi…
A modern-day Hitler…
They accuse him of polarizing and dividing the country.
“It would be hard to conjure up a more evil person.”[3]
As a result of the hatred the Left has for Trump, he’s been impeached twice – on very questionable grounds.
And he has survived not one, not two, but three separate assassination attempts.
Cole Tomas Allen – the latest would-be assassin, stated in his manifesto his disdain of a “pedophile, rapist, and traitor.”[4]
Note that the hatred and dehumanization we are seeing today is not just toward Donald Trump – it’s toward anyone who opposes their radical Left ideology.
3. Grievance politics.
Grievance politics is political opinion and activity based on a personal grievance against a particular politician – usually a president – whom you believe has betrayed you or wronged you in some way.
Much of today’s political activity among the general public – especially voting decisions – is based on grievance politics.
Grievance politics is promulgated and cheered by the biased mainstream media – and by Leftist social media influencers.
President Trump promised no senseless forever wars, they say.
Yet he started a war with Iran.
It doesn’t matter that Trump tried to prevent it, but Iran provoked it.
Trump broke his promise on purpose, says Grievance Politics.
Therefore, vote against him in the midterm elections…
Gas prices are too high… Vote against Trump.
Trump insults reporters and foreign leaders… He’s a bad person…
Vote against him in the midterms.
It doesn’t matter that he secured the border and lowered taxes and the cost of living for everyone.
A broken healthcare system, expensive home and rent prices, Data Centers, ICE overreach… these are all problems created by the Trump Administration, says Grievance Politics…
But their solution is more government, not less.
4. The rise of narcissism
Isn’t it interesting that President Trump is accused of being a narcissist…
Yet those who accuse him of this flaw are themselves narcissists.
Grievance politics is – after all – based on narcissism.
How?
Because both grievance politics and narcissism don’t care about what’s best for others…
They don’t care about what’s best for the country… or what’s best for the world…
They care only about the self – the wants and the desires of the self.
A narcissist is a totally selfish person…
Narcissists believe they are the center of the universe…
The world revolves around them – not around others – and if the President doesn’t do what they think will benefit them right now – they will hate him and vote against him.
And if you don’t think the way they think, you are morally bankrupt in their eyes.
5. The rise of cynicism.
Cynicism toward America is taught to our kids in public schools.
How?
The public tax-supported, government-run schools focus on America’s mistakes and failures, not her successes and her kindnesses toward other nations.
The teachers, the textbooks and the videos create an indoctrination mall of radical Left ideology.
No wonder so many people of the younger generations are cynical toward politics and government today.
No wonder so many kids in both red states and blue states who have been raised in Christian or morally conservative households have flipped to radical Left ideology.
Cynics want to tear down existing political and government institutions.
They either want to replace them with socialistic institutions or just do without them altogether.
Cynics tore down statues of American heroes, burned police stations and more during the widespread riots of 2020 and 2021.
They call for abolishing police and ICE.
They prefer anarchy over the status quo.
As an example of their rampant distrust of government:
- A recent NewsGuard/YouGov poll revealed that 30% of Americans believe at least one of the three assassination attempts of President Trump was staged.
- Another 25% said they were “not sure” whether or not at least one of the assassination attempts was staged.
- Only 45% of the 1,000 Americans surveyed believed all three assassination attempts were real.[5]
6. Identity Politics – the Marxist ideology of dividing people into competing collectivist groups.
Marxist political theory is based on a perceived ongoing social class struggle between two groups:
- The wealthy, ruling elite who own the factories and tools needed to produce goods – the Bourgeoisie
- The working class who do not own the means of production and must sell their labor to survive – the Proletariat
The Bourgeoisie were viewed as oppressors; the Proletariat were the oppressed.
Identity Politics piggybacks on the idea that society is divided between oppressors and the oppressed.
But in Identity Politics there are many “oppressed” groups:
- Blacks, Hispanics, and other minorities based on race
- Women
- Bisexuals and Transgenders
- Atheists, Agnostics, or those from “Christian” homes
The oppressors are usually white men in general – or business owners or Christians.
The more “oppressed” groups you belong to, the more political “capital” you possess – the more credibility you have to speak out about political or social issues….
And the more outrage you can justifiable exhibit.
DEI – Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion was advertised as a way to “even the playing field” and give members of minority “oppressed” groups equal access to services, equal opportunities, and equal outcomes.
But what it did instead was to divide people into groups on the basis of race, gender and sexual orientation.
Opportunities and outcomes were handed out on a discriminatory basis rather than based on effort and merit.
This has caused immeasurable tension, resentment, and political and social division.
DEI has been eliminated from military training, but some educational institutions and corporations have ignored President Trump’s executive order ending DEI.
7. The Origin of Moral Relativism.
Moral relativism actually had its beginning in the Garden of Eden when the Serpent suggested to Eve that she was a better judge of good and evil than God.
Ever since Adam and Eve fell for that demonic deception, people have insisted on determining their own morality – their own ideas of right and wrong, good and evil.
Isaiah the prophet warned about the dangers of moral relativism:
“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness…” (Isaiah 5:20)
When people entertain immoral, evil thoughts and do not immediately reject them, they create an open door in their minds for demons – spiritual forces of darkness – to come in and nurture those evil thoughts.
Eventually, a person’s conscience will become “seared as with a branding iron.” (1Timothy 4:1-2)
When people lose their moral compass, all sorts of moral evils can be justified in their minds…
Even the murder of a political leader with whom one disagrees.
This is how far our society has degenerated in post-Christian America.

Is there any hope for a solution to all of this?
What – if anything – can we do?
We can begin by praying.
Jesus commands us to love our enemies and to pray for those who persecute us. (Matthew 5:43-44)
He also said that we are the “salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.”
“…but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.” (Matthew 5:13)
Salt is a preservative, and light illuminates the darkness and reveals what was previously hidden.
They are both active things, not passive.
We should engage our culture wherever God has placed us within it.
We should speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:14-15) – which can only be done in the power of the Holy Spirit when we are opposed with loud, critical, deceitful and unkind voices.
Jesus says, “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
Action:
- Pray for the salvation of those who reject God and who wish to destroy America as a constitutional republic and turn it into a Socialistic State.
- Pray for wisdom regarding when and how to speak out – and regarding what to say.
