Free speech in California has just been banned. And Newsom wants to take this authoritarian California law nationwide.
If it weren’t so dangerous, it would be funny.
California Governor Gavin Newsom may not crack a smile at satire, but this ancient form of expression has been a staple of human culture since ancient Greece and Rome.
Early Greek and Roman playwrights used satire to mock and critique politicians, rulers, and their society, setting a precedent that has endured through the ages.
However, in today’s California and within the federal government, Democrat leaders like Newsom and Vice President Kamala Harris are on a mission to clamp down on free speech by branding anything they find disagreeable as “misinformation” or “disinformation.”
The controversy centers around two newly enacted Newsom-supported censorship laws. These laws aim to regulate what they deem as “materially deceptive content” during election seasons, specifically targeting online posts that could potentially harm a candidate’s chances at the polls.
Shockingly, the law even mandates that satirical content carry a disclaimer, effectively neutering its ability to critique and provoke thought.
Newsom was outraged by a parody video featuring Vice President Kamala Harris, shared by Elon Musk. Newsom wanted the video outlawed.
Popular satirical site The Babylon Bee filed a lawsuit saying the legislation is an outright assault on freedom of expression.
The law allows room for misuse, empowering state authorities to label any political meme or satirical piece harmful simply because it diverges from their own narrative.
The lawsuit is being led by our friends at the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF).
The lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of the laws, asserting that they threaten not only The Babylon Bee but also individual voices like that of California attorney Kelly Chang Rickert, whose personal blog and social media presence could also fall victim to censorship.
Greg Burt, Vice President of the California Family Council, underscored the gravity of these laws: “California’s new regulations aren’t just silencing comedy; they represent a thinly veiled attempt to suppress political dissent. We stand firmly with The Babylon Bee and Kelly Chang Rickert in their battle for freedom of speech. Such laws undermine the very essence of parody.”
A conservative Twitter/X user also challenged the law in court and won… for now.
Federal Judge John A. Mendez blocked Newsom’s law, stating the law was unconstitutional.
“Most of AB 2839 acts as a hammer instead of a scalpel, serving as a blunt tool that hinders humorous expression and unconstitutionally stifles the free and unfettered exchange of ideas, which is so vital to American democratic debate,” said Judge Mendez.
Attorneys for the State plan to appeal.
America was founded on the principles of free speech and open debate.
Governor Newsom’s attempt to regulate satire under the guise of combating “deceptive content” is not just misguided, it’s dangerous.
It paves the way for political censorship, where any dissenting voice or critical humor could be labeled harmful simply because it challenges the status quo. This is not about protecting voters; it’s about silencing opposition.
Had Shakespeare written his satirical plays today, like Hamlet, he would have been censored and possibly jailed according to Newsom’s new laws.
Governor Newsom and the radical socialists may not appreciate satire or humor, but then again, the fight to protect our First Amendment rights is no laughing matter.
