FBI agents infiltrated churches and schools as secret spies.
Not in America!
Yes, in America.
It happened during the Biden administration – and we’re just now finding out about the details.
This expose could have been another weaponization of government against evangelical Christians or any people of faith.
Here are 5 shocking facts the Biden administration kept hidden from you:
Fact #1: The Biden administration perceived conservative Catholics as political enemies.
The FBI under Christopher Wray launched a bureau-wide, nationally- coordinated effort to monitor traditional Catholics as “potential domestic terrorists.”[1]
Fact #2: A memo distributed nationally by the Richmond, Virginia FBI field office authorized FBI agents to infiltrate and spy on Catholic churches and schools.
FBI analysts in Richmond distributed a memo to over 1,000 FBI personnel, identifying certain Catholic groups as “Radical Traditional Catholics.”[2]
The now-infamous “Richmond Memo” prompted a surveillance campaign against the targeted Catholics (RTCs), claiming that they believe “anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant, anti-LGBTQ and white supremacist ideology.”[3]
The FBI analysts in the Richmond field office consulted with the Louisville, Portland, and Milwaukee field offices to obtain information about Catholic traditionalist groups.
A slide presentation was created outlining the RTCs’ “core concepts,” concluding that their beliefs are similar to Islamist ideology.[4]
All of this came to light when the memo was leaked to the public by a whistleblower, according to documents obtained and revealed recently by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA).
Fact #3: The FBI relied on the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) “hate Map” to identify which Catholic groups to target.
The SPLC is a radical far-left political organization known for labeling Christian and conservative organizations as “hate groups.”
Their “hate map” has been used by violent extremists to identify and commit violence against conservative groups.
It was an egregious violation of the First Amendment freedom of speech clause for a government agency to use the recommendation of a far-left political organization to justify a surveillance campaign.
Fact #4: None of the FBI agents that received the “Richmond Memo” raised concerns about the accusations against Catholics or the spying directives.
The Richmond field office was lauded for its memo if it received any response at all, according to the FBI documents obtained by Senator Grassley.
A second draft memo was prepared by the Richmond field office to be distributed to the entire Bureau via the Counterterrorism Division.[5]
This memo repeated the unsubstantiated assumption that traditional Catholicism promoted violent extremism.
Senator Grassley also found at least 13 other FBI documents and 5 attachments that used the term “Radical Traditionalist Catholic.”[6]
The second draft memo from Richmond was deleted due to public backlash after the original memo was leaked by the whistleblower.
Fact #5: The FBI engaged in a cover-up to hide the extent of the anti-Catholic surveillance effort.
In 2023, then-FBI Director Christopher Wray testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee.
He said he was “aghast” when he learned of the original Richmond memo.
Wray testified that the memo was “a single product by a single field office” that was immediately “withdrawn and removed from FBI systems.”[7]
He did not acknowledge the existence of the second memo.
Nor did he acknowledge the collusion of the Richmond field office with at least three other field offices in producing the original memo.
Nor did he acknowledge the slide presentation or the 13 other FBI documents containing references to the SPLC and “Radical Traditional Catholics.”
To put it bluntly, he lied to Congress.
Details of the FBI cover-up, and details of the weaponization of the FBI under Christopher Wray, have come to light only due to the persistence of Senator Grassley and the cooperation of the current FBI Director, Kash Patel.
Hopefully, the infiltration and undercover spying and surveillance of conservative and Christian groups and individuals by U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies – when the targets have committed no unlawful or violent acts – will never happen again.
Our Founding Fathers would roll over in their graves if they knew how government agencies have been weaponized to harass, censor, silence and attack the First Amendment rights of those they disagree with.
