Olympics Backlash: Mockery of Last Supper Offends 2.4 Billion Christians – 10 Things You Should Know [Video]

Craig HueyChristian Persecution, Current Events, Faith, Family, Paris Olympics

It was blasphemous.

It was unnecessary.

It was an insult to 2.4 billion Christians.

The opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics in France shocked Christians and non-Christians.

What happened?

It started with a mockery of Jesus Christ and his disciples, featuring drag queens and homages to satanic symbolism and pedophilia to recreate Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper.

It was a slap in the face to every Christian watching and Christian athlete.

It was offensive, hateful, disrespectful, and done on purpose.

Here are 10 things you should know…

1) What Happened?

The opening ceremony performance recreated Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. A woman in a blue dress and crown danced and contorted in front of a DJ deck, accompanied by several drag queens.

A young child stood off to the side as a “man” wearing glamor makeup and an open blazer approached the child in an inappropriate, uncomfortable way, dancing and gyrating.

The scene then transitioned into a runway event, with semi-nude drag queens and trans and gay models strutting on stage.

Reality show host Nicky Doll and drag queen Paloma, a French reality show star and winner of Drag Race France, also appeared. Doll was one of the drag queens to carry the Olympic torch and performed during the opening segment.

There was also a white horse, undoubtedly referencing one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse from the Book of Revelation (6:1-2), so obviously, they intended to include religious imagery and Biblical references.

The Paris Olympics opening ceremony had over 28.6 million viewers on NBC and Peacock… many of whom were shocked by the anti-Christian mockery.

Tech company C Spire pulled their advertising from the French Olympics, saying:

“C Spire is supportive of our athletes who have worked so hard to participate in the Olympics. However, we will not participate in the offensive and unacceptable mockery of the Last Supper, which is why we’re pulling our advertising from the Olympics.”

The 2024 Paris Olympics was even bigger than the 17.7 million that tuned into the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

The opening show ridiculed Jesus Christ and the Gospels. Da Vinci’s Last Supper is not just a painting. It depicts the last meal Jesus shared with his disciples before Judas betrayed him and crucified, as detailed in the Gospels.

2) What Conservatives and Christians said

Christians and conservatives were also quick to lambast the event.

For example:

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said:

“Last night’s mockery of the Last Supper was shocking and insulting to Christian people around the world who watched the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. The war on our faith and traditional values knows no bounds today. But we know that truth and virtue will always prevail. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:15).

Steve McConkey, president of 4 Winds USA, a worldwide sports ministry, said:

“The U.N.-controlled Olympic committee has pushed the radical LGBTQ agenda. The IOC continues to show its true colors. They push radical agendas and have allowed the Olympics to be in countries that persecute Christians. Individual athletes must concentrate on their events, and Christians must share Christ despite the Olympic efforts.”

Greg Laurie of Harvest Fellowship in California said:

“Why go out of your way to insult billions of people who believe in Jesus Christ? My take on this might be a bit different than others. People are mocking God today. So, how should we react to this? We redoubled our efforts to bring the Gospel to a lost world. That’s it.”

Pro-life advocate Dr Abby Johnson said:

“It’s crazy how they openly degrade and mock our beliefs then call us intolerant.”

3) Homosexuals were angered and horrified

Christians weren’t the only groups offended. Gays and lesbians, I know, were also offended.

Having respect and acceptance were undermined by this presentation of disrespect and hatred.

Gays Against Groomers were offended as well.

Here’s what they tweeted on X:

“We are absolutely disgusted to see these drag queens and half-naked gender cultists dance around little kids at the Olympics for the entire world to watch. This agenda isn’t just an American issue. It’s global. And if this doesn’t horrify you, then you aren’t paying attention.”

4) What the supporters are saying

Here’s what Nicky Doll wrote on Instagram:

“The opening ceremony did ruffle some feathers… and I LOVE it. Do you know why? Because the Olympics are the biggest stage in the world and queer people have always been the audience of other people’s life and achievement, it is time that we are welcome in space.

It was my absolute honor to perform in front of billions of people around the world and celebrate our Olympians,” Doll’s post continued.

And remember, to the ones that had their feathers ruffled seeing queerness on their screen: WE AIN’T GOING NOWHERE.”

First Lady Jill Biden was also proud of the Olympics opening show, giving high praise for the blasphemous ceremony, saying it was “spectacular.”

Here’s what Jill Biden said:

“So, last night, it was just spectacular,” she said in a statement. “The rain did not dampen our spirits…. Every step of the way, I was thinking to myself, oh my god, oh my god. How are we going to top this?”

“So, ok. Paris has the Eiffel Tower, but we have Hollywood and the magic of Hollywood that makes all dreams come true. I think we’re going to be ok… It’s a city where new generations of dreamers shape our culture,” she added.

5) What the show creator said

Thomas Jolly, art director of the Paris Olympics, who conceived the repugnant opening, said:

“Above all, I wanted this ceremony to include everyone. We must all celebrate this diversity.” He also said, “I was overwhelmed at first. I wondered how to create a show where everyone feels represented as part of this great union. This responsibility was ambitious and complex but magnificent for an artist.

When we watch ‘Emily in Paris’ or ‘Amélie Poulain,’ we know it’s not quite the real Paris. We’re going to play with all those cliches, but we’re also going to challenge them. Paris is also a vibrant youth. Different cultures rubbing shoulders in the streets. I’ll be fired if I tell you anything. All I can tell you is that it will be very meaningful for the artists that will perform.”

Jolly sees religion and the Last Supper as a “cultural artifact” open to use as satire to make a political or cultural point about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). He can’t understand why so many people are upset because he views religion as fiction to be exposed… something made up and not to be taken seriously, especially among “enlightened” people.

6) What others are saying

Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said:

“Opening the Olympics by insulting billions of Christians around the world was a really bad start, dear French,” he wrote. “Seedy.”

Elon Musk said:

“This was extremely disrespectful to Christians.”

English journalist and media personality Piers Morgan said:

“Would they have mocked any other religion like this? Appalling decision.”

Eric S. Raymond, Open-Source Internet Commentator, said:

“What was on display here wasn’t anti-Christianity; it was a compulsion to defecate all over any source of meaning and value in favor of a depraved narcissism. … We have let the mentally ill game our tolerance for too long. It’s time to start stuffing them back into asylums.”

Harrison Butker, NFL placekicker for the Kansas City Chiefs, said:

“Be not deceived. God is not mocked. For what things a man shall sow, those also shall he reap. For he that soweth in his flesh, of the flesh also shall reap corruption. But he that soweth in the spirit, of the spirit shall reap life everlasting.” — Galatians 6:7-8 —

7) The Olympic Organizers Reaction

The backlash to the event from not only the religious but also non-religious people in France, Italy, Britain, the United States, and other countries was overwhelming… In fact, it was so overwhelming that the sponsors started taking down and editing video clips of the opening show.

They even invoked copyright infringement to prevent the media from using videos of the ceremony. They also got the videos censored and pulled from social media platforms like YouTube and X.

In response to the worldwide outrage, the organizers have issued a weak apology… saying they were “shocked that anyone was bothered by what they saw,” claiming that it was “a testament to inclusion.”

“Clearly, there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group. The opening ceremony tried to celebrate community tolerance. We believe this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offense, we are really sorry,” said a Paris 2024 spokeswoman.

8) Not an accident; it was done by design

The performance at the Olympics was by design. They chose to attack and mock Christianity.

9) A reflection on France and French politics

French politician Marion Marechal made a public apology, letting the world know that the mockery at the Olympics is “not an accurate expression of French culture.”

“To all Christians of the world who are watching the Paris 2024 ceremony and felt insulted by this drag queen parody of the Last Supper, know that it is not France that is speaking, but a left-wing minority ready for any provocation,” said Marechal.

Although the radicals who created the opening ceremony would like to erase God, hundreds in Paris gathered to pray and praise God, and missionaries saved 45 people, continuing to do God’s work despite the secularist’s attempts to erase God.

Unfortunately, only 5% of French people attend church weekly, and less than half of the population believes in God.

10) A biblical perspective

This Sunday, my wife and I received Communion at Church. Our pastor denounced the mockery during the Olympics opening and explained the importance of Communion.

When we receive Communion, we remember Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, his resurrection, and more.

As Christians, we should pray for those who created and performed the opening show, even though they mocked Christians and our faith.

God’s word is clear:

“Love thy enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” Matthew 5:44.

This entire event should grieve us, but it’s not something that surprises us.

As it says in God’s word, “Therefore, God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever.” – Romans 1:24-25

As Christians, we need to pray for those who have persecuted us, pray for those who don’t know Jesus  Christ as their personal savior, and pray for revival at the Olympics and across the world.

As the body of Christ, we need to stand against evil and its corruptive influence on our politics and culture.

When we extend forgiveness through our prayers and our deeds, we stand with Jesus against evil and its corruptive influence on our culture.

Christians testify about their faith in Jesus Christ at the Olympics, and Christian athletes do the same…

For example:

Deaf Brazilian skateboarder Rayssa Leal, who participated in the skateboarding event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, gave her testimony for Jesus Christ in reaction to what the producers of the opening ceremony did in mocking Jesus.

Leal (16) used sign language, signing a quote from John 14:6, “Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Leal became Brazil’s youngest Olympian skateboarder in 2021 at the age of 13, winning the silver medal. She earned the second-highest score in the Paris Olympics, ranking her 3rd at the event.

She gave truth and light against the evil and blasphemy of the Olympic opening ceremony show.

The Olympic opening was intended to mock religion, Christian values, the traditional family, and cultural norms that have existed for millennia.

If you take down Christianity, you destroy Western culture… and that’s precisely what they want to do.
