Key Takeaways:

  • Younger Christians have been deceived about the evils of Socialism because of what they’ve been taught in public government-run schools.
  • Socialism eliminates private property and the private ownership of the means of producing products.
  • Socialism eliminates economic freedom because the government decides what consumers need and what products will be produced.
  • Socialism eliminates entrepreneurship and stifles innovation.
  • Socialism removes personal responsibility and replaces it with government responsibility.
  • Socialism eliminates freedom of religion, replacing God with the all-powerful State.
  • Socialism is incompatible with Christianity.
  • Socialism has failed in every nation in which it has been implemented.

You may have heard these clichés:

  • “Socialism eliminates greedy profiteering corporations.”
  • “Socialism eliminates worker exploitation.”
  • “Socialism levels the playing field and produces equity.”
  • “Socialism is fairer to everyone than Capitalism.”

These are some of the mantras that have been taught in public school Social Studies classes over the past 50 years or more.

The true history of socialist governments has been conveniently ignored.

The greatness of a free people, capitalism and America has been ignored or distorted.

Here are 7 truths about Socialism and Christianity you should know – but were probably never taught:

Truth #1: Socialism eliminates private ownership of the means of producing products for sale.

The newly elected socialist mayor of New York City – like all Socialists/Marxists – wants to eliminate private property.

The number one principle of Socialism is Collectivism.

Collectivism means that private or corporate ownership of land, resources, factories, the equipment used in producing products for sale, are replaced by public or government ownership.

The stated goals of this transfer of ownership are:

  1. to prevent exploitation, and
  2. to ensure that resources benefit society as a whole rather than a small elite.

There are three problems with the idea of collective or public or state ownership of the means of producing goods and services:

  1. Confiscating one’s property is theft, which is prohibited by the 8th commandment, “You shall not steal.” (Exodus 20:15; Ephesians 4:28)
  2. When government takes over the production of goods and services, quality declines and shortages occur. It happens in every socialist country.
  3. Collective ownership doesn’t eliminate exploitation or prevent a small elite from unfair benefits – it simply shifts the exploitation and the small elite from corporate conglomerates to the elite ruling class.

Truth #2: Socialism eliminates economic freedom and opportunity.

A socialist economy is a totally planned economy – totally controlled by the elite ruling class, and by faceless bureaucrats.

What you didn’t learn in social studies or in church is that under Socialism, the government decides what your needs are.

The government decides what products and services you need, and which products and services you and everyone else can buy.

You have no economic choices as an individual. You can only buy what the government provides.

And you have no say in the quality of the products because there is no competition among different producers and manufacturers.

You may have what the socialist government says you need, but you won’t be able to have anything extra that you may want.

Truth #3: Socialism makes taking care of the poor a government responsibility.

Socialism is touted as the ideal economic system to eliminate wealth and income inequality, and to ensure that everyone’s needs are met.

This may sound like a good thing – an ideal, utopian society.

But is economic equality possible in the fallen and broken world in which we live?

Both Moses and Jesus said that there will always be poor people among us (Deuteronomy 15:11; Mark 14:7).

It’s because mankind ruined the perfect world God created by rebelling against His moral standard and determining good and evil for himself.

Christianity teaches that taking care of the poor is an individual responsibility and a church or charitable organization responsibility – not a state or government responsibility.

Christians are commanded over and over again to feed the poor and to meet their needs. (Isaiah 58:7; Matthew 5:42; Acts 20:35 and more.)

Proverbs 28:27 says, “He who gives to the poor will never want, but he who shuts his eyes will have many curses.”

The apostle Paul reminds believers in Galatians 5:13, “For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.”

Truth #4: Socialism stifles individual faith, personal creativity and personal self-discipline.

Two of the hallmarks of free enterprise are innovation and entrepreneurship.

To become an entrepreneur and start a new business requires faith and self-discipline to step out and risk failure and loss of investment capital.

And innovation is an exercise in applying the creativity and self-discipline that are characteristics of being created in the image of God.

But entrepreneurship is prohibited in a socialist economic system, and innovation is stifled because there is no reward for it.

One of Socialism’s mantras is “from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.”

This idealistic philosophy ignores one of the basic characteristics of the human sin nature – selfishness.

Very rarely will anyone work up to his or her maximum ability for the sake of others – especially for the sake of strangers.

People will work hard to reap benefits for themselves and for their own family.

But they won’t work hard if their labor only benefits others who aren’t working.

A personal reward incentive is crucial to achieving maximum productivity.

This is why the experiment in communal living failed miserably in Plymouth Colony between 1620 and 1623.

Truth #5: Socialism uses legalized theft.

Socialism believes it is the government’s responsibility to guarantee to everyone access to healthcare, education, housing and employment.

Socialism taxes wealth and profits at progressive rates to fund these guaranteed “rights.”

Christianity teaches that healthcare, education, housing and employment are primarily individual or family responsibilities, not government responsibilities.

In Deuteronomy 6, parents are commanded to teach their children at home, when they travel together, when their children go to bed at night and when they get up in the morning.

The local church also shares some responsibility for education, along with parents.

Progressive taxation is legalized theft – it is not biblical or Christian.

The biblical tax rate is ten percent for everyone, regardless of income or wealth.

And above that flat tax rate, giving is to be voluntary, not mandatory or coercive (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).

In Christianity, social welfare is an individual and a local church responsibility, not a government responsibility.

Examples abound throughout the Bible. Deuteronomy 24 outlines God’s welfare system for both the Jews and the foreigners living among them.

Truth #6: Socialism does not allow freedom of religion.

One of the first things to go in a socialist society is religion.

That’s because Socialism requires total compliance with government control.

The State will provide everything you need, so God is not necessary.

There is no greater enemy of Socialism than faith—that’s why the socialists must ban or control religion.

The State cannot and will not tolerate dissension or debate about its rules and decisions — it insists on being the god of the socialist society.

Those who worship another God – a God that is above the socialist state – must be silenced or eliminated.

“Every socialist system of government has viewed religion as an existential threat,” said Marion Smith, Director of the Victims of Communism Foundation.

“Anything that provides a moral authority higher than the Communist Party is a threat.”

This is why Socialist “programs” in China have killed over 35 million men, women, and children.

North Korea and Cambodia promised radical social transformation, prosperity, and equity but wound up killing, torturing, and arresting any opposition.

According to a recent study, 98% of Americans who embrace Socialism reject religion – and 83% of religious people in the U.S. prefer Capitalism over Socialism.

Truth #7: Socialism leads to economic and moral collapse.

Every socialist nation has failed – without exception.

Socialism brings economic and moral collapse and the creation of a police state.

The opposition is labeled “Class enemies.”

Those who protest are imprisoned or executed – all with the pretense of preserving “society” or “democracy.”

On the Soviet side of the Berlin Wall between1961and1989, armed soldiers, barbed wire, sandbags, and wood blockades were used to stop people from trying to escape.

Anyone caught trying to escape to the “free side” was shot.

If Socialism is so great, why did they need a wall and armed soldiers to keep the people from escaping?

People today are fleeing communist China, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, and other Socialist countries at great risk to their lives.

Schools have ignored the history and legacy of Socialism.

Government school textbooks rewrite it to make it sound like a utopian society.

So, students never learn about the hardships caused by Socialism and the crimes against humanity committed by Socialists.

Millennial and Gen Z Christians have been brainwashed.

So have non-Christians.

Socialism is incompatible with Christianity.

Socialism is incompatible with human nature and reality.

FAQs:

Q: Why do so many Millennial and Gen Z Christians favor Socialism over Capitalism?
A. They have been taught a distorted view of Socialism in school for the past 50 years or more.

Q: What are the main arguments in favor of Socialism, and why are they deceptive?
A. Advocates for Socialism claim that it eliminates the greed of corporations and the exploitation of workers and that it leads to income and wealth equality. In Socialism, the greed and exploitation shift from business owners to the elite ruling class.

Q: Why is Socialism incompatible with Christianity?
A. There are many reasons. The main ones are that Socialism transfers Christian responsibility and initiative to the government, and that Socialism opposes freedom of religion – especially the worship of a Creator God that is higher and more powerful than the State.

Q: Has Socialism ever improved society and living conditions of the working class in nations in which it has been implemented?
A. No. Socialism always fails miserably – without exception – causing economic and moral collapse, and leading to a police state.
