Washington, D.C. witnessed an outrageous attack on President Trump – right in the middle of a church service.
A setting meant for prayer, unity and reflection turned into a blistering political assault aimed directly at the newly inaugurated president.
Here are seven things you need to know:
- The Setting: A Tradition of Unity
The Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service is a long-standing tradition dating back to Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1993. Held at the Washington National Cathedral, the event is supposed to be a solemn moment of prayer for the president, vice president, and the nation.
Shelly and I have been to this church. We’ve seen past Inaugural prayer services. They all have been what you’d call a “compromise.” Trump never should have gone.
Instead, President Trump found himself ambushed.
- The Unexpected Sermon
Instead of offering prayers for wisdom and guidance, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde used the pulpit to attack the president on social and political issues.
Her tone was harsh. Her words were pointed. And the message was unmistakable: This was no prayer service – it was a political takedown.
- Bishop Budde’s Direct Attack
Staring directly at President Trump seated in the front pew, she declared:
“I ask you to have mercy upon the people of our country who are scared. Now, there are gay, lesbian, and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives.”
She then turned her attention to immigration, framing the Trump administration’s stance as cruel and inhumane – without acknowledging the reality that Trump was focusing on criminals and illegal border crossings.
- President Trump’s Reaction
Trump sat in silence, his face unreadable.
But later, he made his feelings known:
“The so-called bishop who spoke at the national prayer meeting was a radical left hardline Trump hater. She brought her church into the world of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone and not compelling or smart. She is not very good at her job. She and her church owe the public an apology.
- Media Frenzy
The mainstream media and radical social media activists exploded.
- Left-wing media outlets celebrated the attack, praising the bishop for “speaking truth to power.”
- Conservatives and Christians were outraged pointing out that a prayer service is meant to be about Christ, not partisan politics.
- The Biblical Truth On Immigration and LGBTQ Issues
The Bible is clear on both immigration and sexuality – but the radical left twists scripture to fit their political agenda.
Immigration: Law, Order and Borders
The Bible commands believers to treat immigrants with kindness and respect (Hebrews 13:2, Leviticus 19:33-34, and other scriptures). But these immigrants the Bible refers to never broke a law to get to Israel. They assimilated into the culture. The Bible does not endorse lawlessness.
- Immigrants must follow the law – “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities.” (Romans 13:1)
- Nations must have borders – “When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when He divided mankind, He fixed the borders of the peoples.” (Deuteronomy 32:8)
- A nation has the right to defend itself – “Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.” (Proverbs 25:28)
Trump’s immigration policy follows biblical principles – secure borders, protection from criminals, and law and order.
Bishop Budde ignored this biblical reality.
LGBTQ Issues: God’s Design is Clear
The Bible is also crystal clear on gender and sexuality, starting in Genesis.
- Male and female were created by God – “Male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27)
- Marriage is between one man and one woman – “A man shall leave his father and mother and be united to his wife.” (Genesis 2:24)
- Homosexuality is called sin –“Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, not idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality…will inherit the kingdom of God (I Corinthians 6:9-10)
Trump is not legislating based on hate –he is upholding the biblical foundation of marriage, family, and morality.
The bishop’s attack was not biblical –it was leftist ideology disguised as faith.
- The Real Role of the Church in Politis
The bishop weaponized the pulpit for her political agenda.
What should have happened?
- The Gospel should have been preached.
- Hope, not division, should have been shared.
- God’s truth –not a political agenda –should have been the focus.
- Prayer should have been the theme.
Instead, she turned a sacred moment into a political ambush.
The church’s mission is not to attack presidents.
Final Thoughts: A Church Hijacked by Politics
This wasn’t a prayer service – it was a political ambush.
President Trump called it out for what it was: a disgrace.
The church should stand for biblical truth –not push the radical left’s agenda.
Next election: Hold it at a different church.
